Implementing Safety and Environmental Protection

The following constitutes an integral part in the implementation plan of UNIVAN's policies pertaining to safety and environment protection:

To firmly support the International Convention for The Prevention of Pollution from Ships (Marpol 73/78) and believe that the first line of defence against pollution must be to avoid accidents occurring.

To ensure all shore and shipboard personnel are fully aware of the impact of their activities on the environment.

To fully recognise the commercial implications in terms of safe ship operations and pollution prevention.

To provide a safe, healthy workplace and environment for the employees ashore and afloat with an objective to eliminate work-related injury and illness by promoting safe practices, proper planning and execution of operations.

To encourage all individuals to identify potentially unsafe conditions or unlawful practices and to undertake corrective measures.

That regular safety and contingency drills are conducted by the Master and at times supervised by the shore based personnel for ensuring that all personnel are fully conversant with their duties in times of eventuality, maintaining a confident and proficient team on board to deal with all contingencies and emergencies.

To inspect and upkeep all items pertaining to safety and pollution prevention for ensuring compliance with requirement of all International Conventions, Codes and National Legislations.

In adhering with our policies and to keep pace with the growing standards of safety, quality and environmental protection, our Company has been successfully certified by Lloyd's register of shipping as being in full compliance with the ISO 9001:2000 Standard and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. We have also been certified by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai and the Lloyd's Register of Shipping under the ISM Code. This gives us the proud distinction of being one of the few shipping companies in the world to be certified by more than one classification society for compliance with the ISM Code.

In addition, we have a totally independent department which performs the sole function of carrying out regular safety inspections of vessels in our fleet. The department consists of a safety & quality manager and superintendent in Hong Kong office and two port captains stationed in India. These people carry out independent safety inspections of all our vessels. Backed with internal auditing expertise these port captains also carry out management system audits.
